Scaling the Hills: Lo

In wake of the Hills series finale, I'm taking an in-depth look at each of the show's primary (meaning, they made the opening credits) cast members, in order to discern what about them (if anything) made for good TV.

We continue with Lo Bosworth.

Reason for Appearing: Original Laguna Beach cast member and real-life best friend of Lauren Conrad, Lo joined the series late in the second season when it became obvious Lauren would soon need a new shoulder on which to cry. Initially, she listened to Lauren bitch about Heidi, offered advice about dating Brody, and coined the name "Justin Bobby."

Major Storylines: The string of episodes where she displayed her disdain for Audrina a little too obviously (thus coming between Audrina and Lauren, and indirectly ruining their friendship); that time she and Lauren got a dog; that time she accused Kristin of doing drugs; that time she had a real boyfriend who kind of, sort of proposed to her.

Off-Camera Drama: Lo may be the only member of the cast never to serve as the source of an Us Weekly cover story. Perez Hilton did call her Lo "the Bitch" Bosworth for a few months, and she and Kristin once had a bitchy exchange via Twitter on account of the aforementioned drug rumors.

Judgement Day: Just as Lo never carried an issue of Us Weekly to record sales, she never carried an episode of The Hills to ratings success. Instead, she spent her time on the show asking leading questions, listening, nodding, giving advice, eating Pinkberry, making sarcastic comments (occasionally veering into outright bitchiness), and making out with Frankie (that happened once, during a Season Three trip to Las Vegas). She planned disastrous birthday parties on boats, she judged people, and she watched other people fight (most memorably, she stayed impressively silent while Lauren and Audrina screamed and cried over the "Lauren and Justin had sex" rumor).

In a recent post on her new website, http://www.thelodown.com/ (also the title of her forthcoming dating advice book), Lo admits she always thought of The Hills as a job, and made a concerted effort to keep her personal life off-camera. Her boyfriend, Scott, only appeared on the show after the couple had dated for a year, and even then, he only appeared in two episodes. With that in mind, her behavior makes perfect sense. Not everyone can run around L.A. crying about tabloid rumors, douchebag boyfriends, mean girls, and plastic surgery. The producers needed a voice of reason, and Lo (supposedly) needed a paycheck: the two made a perfect (and much welcome) match.

Verdict: Of all the supporting players, I would most want to grab a drink with Lo; you just know she's got the good dish on the rest of them. She may not have caused the most drama, but she interjected the series with hearty doses of humor and maturity, and with that, she made good TV.
